VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo in Rwanda, and set high on the jungle-covered slopes of the volcanic Virunga Mountains, the Volcanoes National Park is best known as a sanctuary for the region’s rare mountain gorillas. Visitors flock here to experience face to face encounters with these intriguing creatures. Regulated treks through the reserve allow visitors to spend an hour at a time with these incredible primates in their natural habitat. While the gorillas are without a doubt the main drawcard, visitors can also look forward to exploring a network of scenic hiking trails, with the beautiful day hike to the crater lake on Mount Bisoke being a particular highlight. Make sure to visit the fascinating Karisoke Research Centre and the tomb of the world-famous Dian Fossey.

Day 3

friday 21 January 2022

Meet in the main lodge at 06:00am for a light breakfast.

At 06:45am, your Driver Guide will transfer you to Volcanoes National Park’s Headquarters, which is less than 10 minutes away. Your Driver Guide will have copies of your passport and trekking permit and will submit these to the Park Office for you to be allocated to a gorilla family. There will be enough time to enjoy a delicious cup of local coffee and use the restroom before joining the rest of your group and being briefed by your Volcanoes National Park Guide. Your Driver Guide will then transfer you to the relevant trail for your trek to the gorilla family that you’ve been allocated to. The duration of the trek varies, depending on the location of the family. It can take anything from 30 minutes to 4 hours to locate the gorilla family. Once you find them, you’ll have one magical hour to spend with the gorillas – watching them interact, feed and play.
