This time of year in Spitsbergen, the midnight sun is in full force. Adventure awaits both day and night on this ski expedition across the Arctic glaciers between Isfjorden and Kongsfjorden. Explore the widely untouched land of Spitsbergen and encounter the rare wildlife it has to offer. Although this trip’s itinerary is highly dependent on the weather, be certain you’ll get the chance to explore Esmarkbreen and Trollheimen.

What to Know

  • This trip takes place in late May

  • The average temperature is 23-40 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Participants should be physically fit enough to cover 6-9 miles per day while carrying a pulka filled with with equipment, as well as knowledgable about skiing and winter camping

  • The pulka you must carry will weigh 45-65 lbs, in addition to your personal equipment which can be carried in either a backpack or pulka

  • Minimum age is 18 years old

Sample Itinerary

Day 1: PREPARATION

Pack and learn all about your trip during an inforational briefing. Instructors will teach you how to properly use the cooking gear, pulka, ski equipment, and tent. Accommodation at Spitsbergen Guesthouse that evening.

Day 2: TRAVEL TO YMERBUKTA/BOREBUKTA

Eat breakfast and check out by 9 A.M. Sail to Ymerbukta/Borebukta in an open polar circle boat and take in the gorgeous views for 1-2 hours. From that point onward all you need are your skis, pulkas, and backpacks of personal equipment before venturing into the remoteness of the Arctic. Although this skiing safari has no specific schedule, your guide will take weather conditions into consideration to ensure the most safe and exciting trip possible.

Day 3-6: SKI SAFARI

During the next several days you will ski across the breath-taking glacial landscape of the Trollheimen area. Your experienced guide will take you on a route that is the most appropriate for the current weather, but regardless of where you end up the views will be spectacular. 

Day 7: FAREWELL

Your skiing expedition will end in the afternoon in Ymerbukta. Get picked up in the open polar circle boats and return to Longyearbyen.
